Turquoise Horizon – morning over a calm sea
An almost square canvas of crumpled white plaster over which a single morning spills: at the upper middle height floats a soft mint-turquoise band of clouds with its brightest turquoise core left of centre, beneath it lies a darker slate blue-grey mass, and the lower quarter calms into a pale blue-white field.
Technique & Texture
The white and cream ground is creased and cracked like an old wall, and the colour bands are rubbed into it softly, without hard edges. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the crumpled texture beneath the colour is real and comes alive in side light.
The Motif
The slate mass is heavier on the left, where it is cracked like a storm cloud, thinning toward the right into pale blue-grey. Beside it, flecks of gold light up: warm gold dust near the left edge and a distinct row of golden sparks running from the centre to the right edge – the sun breaking through the mist.
