Three Horizons – layers from white to dark slate
A landscape of horizontal layers descending from light to dark: at the very top a thin beige sliver, beneath it a wide cracked white field with black speckled veins, the middle turns silver, and the bottom is closed by a heavy dark slate-teal mass.
Technique & Texture
Each of these layers has its own texture: the white is cracked like dry earth, the silver-grey smooth, the dark lower one dense and deep, and the transition between them torn, with pale patches on the left. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the layers are laid one over another, not drawn.
The Motif
Within the upper white field a sand-brown streak runs across the right half, like the trace of an ancient horizon, and at the centre of the canvas floats a dark smoky blotch – the shadow of a ship or a storm on a distant horizon that gives the landscape its story.
