The Arc – a dark curve and ribbed white
A mixed-material composition in earth tones: from the top edge, a large smooth olive-brown form descends along the whole right side to the lower sixth, with a single clean curve as its left edge – an arc that commands the right third of the canvas. At the upper left it is answered by a grey-beige plaster block with darker frame lines.
Technique & Texture
The lower left half is ruled by white-cream plaster with a corduroy-ribbed texture: a horizontal ribbed strip crosses the left half just above mid-height, and at the centre stands a large white ribbed form shaped like a flag or the number seven, with fine vertical ribs. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – smooth, cracked and ribbed are three real materials.
The Motif
The composition is locked by two small black forms – a rectangle at the left edge and a vertical bar beside a tiny ribbed grille at the centre – two architectural keys that stake out the earth tones.
