The sky carries a plaster texture with cream and gold flecks, while the sea is scratched and scraped, with tiny white dots like sparks on the water. It is a hand-painted artistic painting; the video above (0:40) first shows a hand working the horizon band with a wide brush and then scraping pale paint across the top with a palette knife, then the tall canvas of Golden Reflection leaning beside frame samples, then the painting hanging in a stairwell beside a pendant light, and finally the scraped cream and gold surface close up.
The Motif
The gold flames most strongly just left of the centre of the horizon, while toward both edges two darker bronze-brown masses rest on the horizon line – like a lit shoreline or a curtain of cloud. The sea darkens toward the lower left corner; the sky cools slightly toward the band into grey-blue.
