Above the Water – violet trees in reflection
Wall art casts violet and turquoise trees into a bright sheet of water taking the lower third of the canvas — modern painting of this kind turns on which half is lit — here it is the wrong one.
Technique and texture
The canopies are built from dense dotted loads that stand high off the canvas and give the foliage a palpable thickness. The water is pulled into long horizontal strokes so smooth that the relief above it reads all the more strongly. Thin vertical branch lines are drawn between the trees, cut into wet paint.
The motif
The reflection is painted lighter than the trees, so the lower half glows and the scene appears lit from below. A group of gold-yellow canopies on the left is the only warm point and pulls a look toward itself, with a denser violet wood on the right. The shore between wood and water is given by a row of dark horizontal strokes, and the sky behind is pale grey and almost without colour.
Setting and placement
Cool violet and turquoise get along with grey and white, so this one settles into an already furnished room instead of asking it to change. The landscape crop is right for the broad strip above low furniture.
