Ambient – A Monumental Circle with Engraved Signs
An intellectual abstraction: a gigantic grey-cream circle, placed slightly right of centre and spanning almost the full height of the canvas, surrounded by blocks of colour – matte orange on the left, red verticals along the far left edge, a dark blue wedge at the upper left, and a blue field along the lower edge.
Technique & Texture
The interior of the circle is a plaster surface engraved with drawings: arcs, grids, writing-like scribbles, interwoven with scratch marks. It is a hand-painted artistic painting – every incision was made into fresh paint, once and definitively.
The Motif
Right of the circle’s centre shine two tiny golden dots like eyes, at the lower right and upper right trail faint red threads, and across the top of the circle runs a dark arc like an eyebrow. The circle acts like an ancient tablet with a message every reader deciphers in their own way.
