Dimensions of Art II – a combed silver shape over cracked grey
Wall art cools the whole picture down to silver grey, cracking the upper left into a coarse net and running copper-brown bands diagonally through the lower right: painting on canvas, one long combed shape crossing the middle and tapering to a point on the left.
Technique and texture
The grey was laid thick and left to crack, and each crack holds a line of shadow. The silver shape was combed into furrows that follow its curve, so the light travels along it as the viewer moves. The copper bands were pulled with a hard knife and keep the tool marks exactly as they were left.
The motif
Red planes show through the copper in two places and add depth without becoming an accent. A black band runs parallel to the silver shape and borders it from beneath, which makes the silver appear lifted off what it lies on. White drops run down the right edge and stop short of the bottom.
Setting and placement
The combing makes the silver shape read differently from each end of a room, so a wall you walk toward serves it better than one you sit facing. Metal, concrete and darker wood are its natural neighbours, and a small study or a hallway holds it without trouble.
