In Space XI – leaf imprints between red and ochre
Wall art crosses a saturated red rectangle on the left with a gold-brown band that comes in on the diagonal from the right, and lays three pale leaf imprints over both — decorative painting whose real subject is the difference between a coarse crack and a delicate imprint.
Technique and texture
The red and ochre planes were laid thick and allowed to craze, and the net of cracks across them reads as dried earth. The leaves were pressed into paint that was still soft and then whitened, so they sit lighter than what is beneath them with their veins showing. Every boundary between planes is straight and hard, with no blending anywhere along it.
The motif
The red rectangle and the ochre band do not meet square: the band is tilted, and the darkest place on the canvas collects where they cross. The leaves are not matched in size and not one is whole — two of them are cut off by the edge of a plane. Even the creamy corners differ in size, which is what keeps the whole thing from reading as symmetrical.
