In Space XII – two combed arcs over grey
Wall art stretches two dark combed arcs across a heavily worked grey-white ground, one rising from the left and the other falling on the right, with an upright brown-copper field standing between them: abstract painting whose surface is as physical as anything in the room it hangs in.
Technique and texture
Both arcs were dragged with a comb into dense parallel furrows that narrow at the tips until they disappear. Underneath, a knife put down flat pieces which were then spattered and in places flooded with white that was allowed to run. The ribbed insets were pressed in with a mould and are the only regular pattern anywhere on the canvas.
The motif
The arcs neither touch nor mirror each other: the upper one is longer and more closed, the lower shorter and more open. The field between them is broken into vertical strips like weathered sheet metal, and it carries the weight from one arc to the other. White drops crowd along the top edge and thin out as they go down.
Setting and placement
Grey is doing the load-bearing here, so the painting will not dictate what colour the room becomes. It is at its strongest on a white wall in a space that already has metal or concrete in it, where the sheet-metal field stops looking like an effect.
