Description
paintings – Blue Coast – sea between a white sky and white sand
Wall art beds a broad band of saturated blue between a pale grey sky above and a sandy white along the lower edge — abstract painting that arrives at a coast without drawing one.
Technique and texture
The colour is laid with the blade in long horizontal passes that tear through to a lighter ground in places. The sky is built from several thin white and grey layers with the weave of the canvas left visible between them. The white droplets were flicked onto paint that had already dried and sit on top of it as a fine relief.
The motif
The composition falls into three horizontal bands, of which the middle is by far the strongest in colour. A dark, almost black line runs across the full width inside the blue and reads as depth rather than as a drawn object. The pale band at the foot is the quietest passage and sets the whole thing on the ground.
Setting and placement
Cold blue in a tall upright crop refreshes a warmly furnished room rather than joining it. Against pale timber and white walls the blue becomes more saturated still.
