Technique and texture
A blade built the ground in short dense loads, and the surface it leaves is grainy. The red dress is painted with a more fluid colour and carries bright reflections where the cloth breaks. The skin tones are softly modelled and are the only passage with no visible structure.
The motif
The figure stands on one leg and holds the hem of the skirt with both hands, so the whole stance rests on that one contact with the ground. The hair is blown aside and continues the movement of the hat. A wide red hat covers the upper part of the face and leaves only the mouth and chin visible, so what the picture shows is a posture and not a particular person.
Setting and placement
A very upright proportion puts this one to work on the tall narrow wall that most rooms have and few pictures fit — beside a staircase, or between two doors. The warm ochre and olive of the ground tie it to timber and leather.
