Description
paintings – Stylized City – a red square on grey quiet
Wall art lodges rectangles of different sizes in a low band across the middle of the canvas and sets a large red square among them — modern painting whose whole event happens along one horizontal.
Technique and texture
The planes are painted smooth and even with no visible stroke, like coloured paper. The black lines are drawn with a fine tip and are deliberately restless — they break off, double back and run past edges. White strokes are laid on dry and behave like chalk over a smooth ground.
The motif
The rectangles are placed so their edges touch without ever aligning into a straight line. Beside a yellow-orange trapezium two circles appear, one yellow-green and one orange, and they take the strictness out of the row. The left half of the ground is a saturated red-orange and the right a soft grey, and the change between them is not an edge but a dispersal, like mist.
Setting and placement
A wide landscape proportion with half of it held in quiet grey lets a wall breathe instead of filling it. Above a long chest or a desk the band lines up with the horizontal of the furniture.
