Pillar of Space – one red block among cream planes
Wall art anchors an upright red block right of centre between cream and beige textured planes — painting on canvas spare enough that the block’s position carries the whole composition.
Technique and texture
The cream planes were built in several thin coats and then scoured, which gives them the look of a worn wall carrying fine scratches. The red block is the opposite: laid thick and even with no internal drawing, so it behaves like inserted material rather than like a stroke. The band along the bottom is the densest paint on the canvas and is cut off sharply at its upper edge.
The motif
The block reaches neither the top edge nor the bottom, which is why it is understood as an object standing in a space rather than as a division of the canvas. To its left a wide pale plane is left with nothing happening in it, and that emptiness is what gives the block its weight. A dark vertical line runs down the block’s right side like a shadow.
Setting and placement
A composition this reduced carries from across a room and survives a busy one, because there is only one thing in it to find. It belongs with raw concrete, metal detail and pale timber rather than with soft furnishing.
