Sunset 2 – a city at dusk, warmed by its windows
The cool sister of the fiery Sunset: a misty city in teal and blue-greyish tones, above which floats a pale sage-green haze. Down the centre descends a soft, pale shaft of light – there is no burning sun-point here; this evening is quiet.
Technique & Texture
The tower planes are laid in pale blue, teal and blue-grey, with a distinct turquoise column right of centre; at the far left edge and at the lower right stand brown-bronze buildings. This is a hand-painted painting – the haze and the planes mix directly on the canvas, without hard edges.
The Motif
In the lower middle band, on both sides – denser on the left – warm golden patches of windows light up, and their glow pours into the water. The lower quarter is a surface of horizontal, wet strokes: olive-brown and gold on the left, teal and blue toward the right.
