Touch of the Sea – scratches in deep blue
Wall art incises fine scratches and cuts into a deep blue field that fills the canvas edge to edge — abstract painting with not one warm tone anywhere in it.
Technique and texture
Several overlapping layers went down before any of them was rubbed back, so older and darker blues push through the top one. The scratches were cut into paint that had already set, which is why they stay sharp instead of bleeding. Scattered between them are small gold impressions, the only colour on the canvas that is not blue.
The motif
The scratches collect into three or four clusters and the blue between them is left perfectly smooth, which gives the whole a rhythm without any drawing. On the left half the marks run long and parallel; on the right they are short and crossed. There is no horizon — this is nearer to looking down into water than out across it.
Setting and placement
Deep blue absorbs light rather than returning it, so this canvas asks for a bright room or enough lamplight to make up the difference. Where the furniture runs warm it does the opposite job to the rest of the room, which is usually the point of hanging it.
