Tree and Lava – a blue crown in a gold wind

Technique and texture
The sky is painted in short broad strokes running in several directions at once, which is what makes it swirl around the crown. The foliage is dabbed on in small clusters of two blues with the ground left visible between them. Trunk and branches were pulled in single strokes that taper to a hair at the tips.
The motif
The crown is not symmetrical — it reaches further left than right, and that gives the scene its direction. Small dark birds are scattered through the sky and repeat the blue of the leaves. Because the horizon sits low, the tree takes almost the whole canvas.
Setting and placement
Warm sky against cool crown is a hard contrast, so this one becomes the colour centre of a room whether or not it is asked to. The landscape crop suits the run of wall above a sofa or a long chest of drawers.
