What is on the canvas
The canvas is markedly long and low — the width is about four times the height. There is no
sky, no bank and no horizon: only a section of the water surface, seen from
above. The ground is dark, between blue-green and slate grey, and it is not uniform: horizontal
masses of lighter green and blue drift across it and read as a slow movement below the surface.
Through the middle red-brown strokes wind in irregular arcs — reflections of
branches and stems lying on the water like a net. Across the lower half and towards the left edge
more than ten white lily blossoms with orange-yellow hearts are scattered; they
are set down as short, thick touches and are the only light points on the whole canvas. The top
edge is the darkest and bluest, the bottom edge lighter and greener.
A section with no edges
The scene has neither beginning nor end: the surface continues past both side edges, and
nothing in the work says where the section was taken from. That is exactly why it reads more like
a view through a window than a portrait of a pond — the eye looks for a centre, finds none, and
travels from blossom to blossom instead. This oil on canvas reproduction is built from three kinds
of stroke: broad horizontal masses for the water, long curved lines for the reflections of
branches, and short thick touches for the blossoms. The depth that results is apparent and
inverted — what is lightest floats on top, and what is darkest is not behind but below.

What we deliberately do not state here: Monet painted this motif in more than
one version, so which of them is the original behind this particular reproduction is not
established. You will therefore find no year of execution, no collection name and no accession
number on this page. We say what is visible on the canvas and nothing beyond it.
How it works on the wall
The format is panoramic and asks for a long, unbroken wall — above a sofa, above a bed, above a
low sideboard, or in a corridor where you walk past it. Because the work is low, it does better
hung a little lower, at seated eye level. Six sizes are offered: 130 x 30 cm and 175 x 40 cm suit
a narrower bed or a horizontal accent in a hallway, 216 x 50 cm and 260 x 60 cm are the usual
choices above a three-seater, and 305 x 70 cm and 350 x 80 cm are meant for large, empty walls.
Because the range of colour is dark and cool, hand-painted canvas art of this kind needs a light
wall and warm rather than cold lighting; in an under-lit room the blossoms are lost.
Hand-painted, not printed
This fine art reproduction is made with a brush, not a printer. A print lays the colour in an
evenly thin film, so water and blossoms come out equally smooth. Applied by hand, the water is
dragged thin and wide while the blossoms sit in thick, raised touches that cast a small shadow
above the canvas. That is exactly why the blossoms light up one after another as you walk along
the wall — a print cannot do that, because there everything is the same thickness. Because it is
handwork, every copy differs a little.

Ordering, lead time and approval before dispatch
The work is painted to order, so the lead time is 15 to 45 days, and for the
largest sizes usually nearer the upper end. Before anything is sent we send you a photograph of
the finished piece for approval; only once you confirm do we stretch the canvas on a wooden frame
and prepare it for hanging. As wall decor it belongs where there is room beside it — a panoramic
