What is on the canvas?
The canvas is horizontal and falls into two halves: a dense meadow below, a broad clouded sky above. Two figures move through the middle. A man in a dark coat and hat walks to the left, a woman in a pale dress and hat to his right; both carry dark parasols that read above them as two round shapes. At the lower right, hidden to the chest in the grass, a child in a light hat stands and looks toward us. Two tall trees rise at the right edge and close the scene, while behind the figures a plain opens out with a low line of trees in the distance. The foreground is scattered with blue, violet and white flowers laid on in short dabs, so the grass is nowhere even.
Who are the figures in the meadow?
Exactly who they are is not recorded. We know what is visible: the two adults are dressed for a walk rather than for work in a field, and the parasols say the sun is high even though the sky is clouded. The child is not beside them but apart, which takes the pose of a group portrait away from the scene and gives it the look of a chance moment. Monet painted family and acquaintances outdoors often in this period, but without names in the record we do not claim it for this canvas. We say what is visible on it and nothing beyond.

The title The Promenade is not a unique name. Several canvases by Monet appear under it in the catalogues with a similar scene: figures in a meadow, a parasol, a low line of trees behind. The motif among Monet’s works
A figure with a parasol in a meadow is a recurring scene in Monet. Its closest relative is The Walk, Woman with a Parasol, where the same idea is drawn down to a single figure on an upright canvas. The group version of the garden scene is offered by Women in the Garden, while in Poppy Field (Giverny) the flowers take over the foreground as they do here. When the planting closes the view almost to the top, the result is Corner of the Garden at Montgeron.

The painter builds the surface the way the original does: the flowers in the grass are short thick dabs standing above the weave, while the sky is laid on in broader, smoother passes. That difference in thickness is exactly what a print cannot give you, because there is nothing on it to cast a shadow; light catches the ridges of paint differently in the morning and in the evening. Because everything is done by hand, no two copies are ever quite alike, and each is its own object.
