This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, Landscape with Houses, is an oil reproduction of a drawing from 1917. The original is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
What the sheet shows
The sheet shows a group of houses along a ridge: a row of low buildings and a larger house with a steep roof, drawn in thin black line with almost no shading. Below them run long horizontal strokes flecked with small vertical ticks, which read as banks and planted ground. The lower half of the sheet is left empty, giving the drawing air and throwing the rooflines forward.
The original’s medium and format
The original is a drawing on paper — the museum records it as “Black chalk on paper” — measuring 29.2 × 45.2 cm (inv. 1984.433.302).
Where it is
The drawing is today in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which received it through the Scofield Thayer bequest (inv. 1984.433.302).
