What the sheet shows
The sheet shows a group of houses along a ridge: a row of low buildings and a larger house with a steep roof, drawn in thin black line with almost no shading. Below them run long horizontal strokes flecked with small vertical ticks, which read as banks and planted ground. The lower half of the sheet is left empty, giving the drawing air and throwing the rooflines forward.

From 1921 he lived in Vienna for more than two years, where he was psychoanalysed by Sigmund Freud and bought works by Klimt, Schiele and other artists. He left his art collection to the Metropolitan Museum, which received it after his death in 1982.
