Sand and Ink – calligraphy between two black masses
A cream-white field, two deep black masses and one sandy ribbon: at the upper right lies a black mass with a dry-brushed tail sweeping to the left, at the lower right a second, larger one with heavy impasto texture. Between them, from the upper centre, descends a broad sand-beige ribbon.
Technique & Texture
The ribbon does not fall in one diagonal but in stepped sections with two elbow kinks – a turn to the left in the upper third, a turn to the right beneath it – then it drops straight to the bottom edge. This is a hand-painted work of art – the brush bristles show in the ribbon, the relief in the blackness.
The Motif
The left middle of the canvas is settled by thin scratchy black sketches, like scaffolding, with fragments of spatter and a small ink stain at the lower left – an architect’s note beside the calligrapher’s stroke.
