Summer Field – a landscape from above in colour patches
A soft-edged patchwork of colour rectangles like a view of a summer landscape from the air: a cool top – pale blue sky across the upper band with a white opening at the centre – and warm earth at the bottom, where large terracotta-chestnut masses lie at the lower left and right of centre, with an ochre-orange corner at the lower right.
Technique & Texture
Between them the patches take turns: a salmon plane at the upper left crossed by a single thin straight white line, cobalt blue patches at the left middle, a cream-beige patch right of centre and a sage-green column holding the whole right edge. This is a hand-painted work of art – the patch edges are soft, rubbed in, not drawn.
The Motif
The heart of the painting is a yellow field left of centre in the lower half, with golden droplets spraying toward the middle; a grey-green calm band along the lower centre gently pins the landscape to the ground.
