Description

Time on the Wall – a cream wall over a black band

Abstract painting renders almost the whole canvas as a smoothed cream and ivory plane and closes it along the lower edge with a narrow black band: painting on canvas built on a deliberately extreme proportion.

Technique and texture

The bright plane is built from several coats of dense plaster scratched back with a narrow tool once it had dried. The scores are shallow and irregular, so light breaks in them differently than it does on the smooth passages. The black band went on last and is the only place with a wet, flowing load.

The motif

The proportion is deliberate: the bright field takes four fifths of the canvas and the dark band one. Thin vertical scores run down across the light field from the top edge to the middle. Inside the dark strip, pale marks and brief trickles come up like light escaping under a wall. There is no shape anywhere, so what is left is texture and colour.

Setting and placement

There is no more neutral combination than cream and black, so this competes with nothing else in a room. Against a darker wall the bright plane behaves like an opening cut into it.

  • Technique: hand-painted painting on canvas, several coats of dense plaster scratched back when dry, shallow irregular scores, wet flowing black band
  • Palette: cream, ivory, black, white
  • Ideal for: living rooms, hallways, working corners
  • Character: minimal, textural, extreme

Time on the Wall for a hallway, bedroom or work corner

Time on the Wall is offered in 15 upright sizes, from 40 x 55 to 200 x 279 cm. The cream canvas with its black band along the lower edge settles on nearly any wall, so choose the size by the room: 50 x 69 or 60 x 83 cm in a hallway, 60 x 83 cm beside a bed, 70 x 97 cm above a console about 100 cm wide, which covers roughly two thirds of its width. Above a 120 cm desk, 80 x 111 cm fits, and a high living room or stairwell wall takes 100 x 139 or 140 x 195 cm.

The cream and black canvas comes stretched on a wooden stretcher, ready to hang, when you choose YES in the Stretcher menu. A frame for Time on the Wall is optional, and the Frame menu begins with “Without frame”. Delivery takes 15–45 days. Time on the Wall is hand-painted, from the coats of dense plaster and scratched scores to the flowing black band, so this painting is not a print.

Who is the Time on the Wall painting for?

Time on the Wall is for anyone who wants texture and calm on the wall rather than a colourful scene. Almost the whole canvas is cream, closed along the lower edge by a narrow black band, so the painting reads like a piece of old wall or a window cut into one. It belongs in a minimalist or Scandinavian home, in a hallway, a bedroom or a work corner, next to wood, linen, concrete or black metal. Because it is upright, Time on the Wall also fills a narrow wall beside a door or a wardrobe.

How is the Time on the Wall painting made?

Time on the Wall is hand-painted by our painters. They build up dense plaster on the canvas in several coats and, once it is dry, scratch it back lightly with a narrow tool, which leaves irregular vertical scores. The black band goes on last, as the only wet, flowing layer, with pale traces rising out of it. Because the texture is made by hand, you can feel it on the canvas, and every Time on the Wall painting comes out a little different. When it is finished, we send you a photograph of it to approve, and only then does it ship.

Rolled, stretched or framed?

We ship Time on the Wall the way you choose: rolled, stretched on a 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher, or framed. Our workshop in Slovenia does the stretching and framing. Stretched, it arrives ready to hang; rolled is worth it for the large sizes or when a framer near you will frame it. Without a frame the cream plane runs to the edges, while a thin black or wooden frame brings out its wall-like character.

How should I hang and care for it?

Keep the centre of Time on the Wall at eye level, about 150 cm from the floor; above a console or desk, leave 20 to 30 cm between the top and the bottom edge. Side light from a window or a wall lamp shows the plaster texture, casting small shadows in the scores. Lift dust out of the relief with a soft dry brush, without water or cleaners.

Is Time on the Wall a good gift?

For someone who likes simple, calm rooms, Time on the Wall is a gift that goes with almost any wall; 40 x 55 and 50 x 69 cm fit a hallway or the space beside a bed. If you do not know the room for Time on the Wall, give a gift voucher.

Questions before buying Time on the Wall

Which size of Time on the Wall suits a hallway?

In a narrow hallway choose 50 x 69 or 60 x 83 cm, and on a wider hallway wall 70 x 97 cm, so the cream plane reads as a bright opening.

Does Time on the Wall work on a dark wall?

Yes, on a darker wall the cream plane with its black band reads as an opening in the wall, and on a white wall as quiet texture.

Can I order Time on the Wall in a size that is not among the 15?

Yes, we paint the cream plane with its black band as a painting made to order in your measurements.

How high should Time on the Wall hang?

Keep the centre of Time on the Wall about 150 cm from the floor; above a console, with the bottom edge 20 to 30 cm over the top.

Is Time on the Wall a print?

No. The plaster, the scratched scores and the black band are painted by hand by our painters, and you can feel the texture on the canvas.

How do I clean Time on the Wall?

Clean the plaster scores with a soft dry brush; a cloth, water and cleaning products are not suitable.

Can I order Time on the Wall rolled?

Yes. When you order, you choose whether Time on the Wall comes rolled, stretched or framed.

Which frame suits Time on the Wall?

A thin black or wooden frame that brings out the cream plane; without a frame the paint runs to the edges.
