Two Shadows – a channel of light between the black
Two massive glossy black shadow masses on a warm gold-amber plaster ground, with a channel of light winding between them: the left shadow descends from the upper left corner and ends in a dripping tail at a third of the height, then rises again from the bottom as a stepped silhouette with tower notches.
Technique & Texture
The right shadow is a giant – from the top edge down the whole right side to the bottom, with a spiky left contour at the centre and drips at its foot. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the blackness is laid in a dense glossy impasto that catches the light.
The Motif
Between the shadows the golden channel of light widens at the upper centre and narrows toward the bottom, while the ground is layered, warm gold-cream with soft staining. A play of positive and negative space: the shadows are architecture, the light the path between them.
