Golden Rods – the zen rhythm of reeds
A field of rhythm made of about twenty thin dark vertical lines over a gold-sand plaster, like a wall of bamboo or reeds: the dark umber lines stand at almost even intervals, wavering slightly by hand, and mostly run the full height.
Technique & Texture
The plaster between the rods is heavy and crumpled, warm gold-brown in the upper two thirds, deepest in the top corners, passing into a silvery-sage sheen across the lower third. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the cracks and folds are real texture, not a pattern.
The Motif
A few rods stop just short of the top, while elsewhere the rhythm runs unbroken from top to bottom. A pure painting of texture and rhythm, with no other forms – the tonal shift from a warm top to a silver bottom gives a calm, zen breathing.
