Callas – five heads across the full width

Technique and texture
The blooms are built in thick kneaded white that curls and lifts above the canvas along the edge of each leaf. The inside of the funnel is painted in grey and black with soft transitions, so it looks deeper than it is. The field behind is spattered and in places wiped with a cloth, which takes the smoothness off it.
The motif
The flowers are not evenly spaced: two on the left sit closer together, the middle one is the largest and faces square out, and the two on the right are shifted slightly downward. The stems are barely indicated and lose themselves in the ground. Nothing in the composition suggests where the row begins or ends.
Setting and placement
A format like this is made for a long, empty stretch of wall — above a sofa, a bed, or along a hall. The single red note is small enough that the rest of the room sets the tone.
