Terracotta and Dusk – a black sweep across cream
Painting on canvas slashes a wide black sweep horizontally across the upper third of a pale cream field and gathers terracotta, orange and cobalt in clusters on either side of it — modern painting keeping two thirds of itself deliberately empty.
Technique and texture
The black sweep was made with a dry blade, so scratches and places where the colour never took are visible inside it. The clusters beside it are painted wet into wet and pass into one another without a hard border. The lower part of the canvas is worked in thin layers that let the weave of the cloth show.
The motif
Toward the right the sweep branches into several thinner strokes, as though losing force. Terracotta and blue are set side by side and strengthen each other, so the most saturated places on the canvas are exactly there. The empty lower part gives the whole a quiet base.
Setting and placement
Two thirds of this canvas is quiet, so it can be hung where a picture normally would not survive the competition.
