Depth and Light – turquoise over a cream band
Painting on canvas underlays a deep turquoise field with a wide cream band across the lower third and separates the two with a hard dark line: abstract painting divided firmly and on purpose off centre.
Technique and texture
The turquoise carries several see-through coats, parted here and there onto something paler underneath. The black and white slices are set down in one sweep and nowhere corrected, so their edges are as sharp as broken pieces. The cream band is the thickest part of the canvas and keeps the marks of the blade along its whole length.
The motif
The division into two bands is decisive and asymmetrical, the dark zone taking two thirds. The cluster of slices is the only place with movement and lies high on the left, so the eye travels diagonally downward. The lower band behaves like a shore beneath deep water, broken only by a few dark traces.
Setting and placement
One colour governs everything, which is why the picture is better left to hold a wall by itself. Against a white or sandy ground its depth reads strongest.
