Autumn I – three trees above gold water
Painting on canvas lines three red-orange trees along a dark band of water and sets them under a pale blue sky, the middle one taller so the row never hardens into a fence — decorative painting whose calm comes from that one deliberate irregularity. In front of the trees an ochre field opens with a bright reflection down its centre.
Technique and texture
The sky is worked with a knife into horizontal layers, chipped in places so grey shows under the white. The crowns are built from many small dabs of the brush and never close into a single plane. The foreground field is the most granular passage on the canvas, taken almost to sand and then smoothed again where the reflection runs.
The motif
The dark band behind the trees is loaded with small light tones that behave like glints on water. The bright reflection in the foreground is the only light source in the lower half and it pulls the eye into the depth of the field. The trunks are thin and pale, and they keep the row transparent.
Setting and placement
The horizontal division into sky, water and field gives the canvas a settled axis, which is why it reads as restful above a sofa. Warm ochres tie it to timber and leather — a living room, a dining room, an office.
