Colourful Tree – a crown in three bands of colour
Painting on canvas splays a single tree into a wide arc on a plain white ground and divides its crown into three bands of colour — modern painting handling a spectrum the way a landscape usually handles distance.
Technique and texture
A leaf here is a bead of thick colour tipped off the point of the blade, each one angled away from the branch. The trunk is painted in longer winding strokes of gold-brown and olive with the swirl of the paint left visible. The white ground is matt and smooth with no texture at all, which pushes the crown entirely forward.
The motif
The trunk climbs from the lower edge in a soft S and divides near the top into two main branches that open to either side. The crown is densest just above that fork and thins toward the edges into single strokes. The bands run horizontally — warm gold and rust on the left, pink and scarlet through the middle, blue-green on the right — and a few loads have flown clear of the crown and hang in the white.
Setting and placement
A landscape shape belongs on a long wall, and the white ground means it will not darken the room it hangs in. Hung where the light is even, the three bands stay legible as bands rather than merging into one mass.
