Fiery Landscape – heat turning on itself

Painting on canvas swelters through glowing orange, yellow and red with dark green and blue-green vortices winding across it: abstract painting where the landscape is nothing but a temperature.

Technique and texture

The work is carried in long swept strokes that overlap without mixing; in places the colour thins to translucency and in others it stands in a dense ridge. Long runs travel down the lower edge, let down over paint that was still wet. At the centre the load is lightest and most thinned, which is what makes a hearth of it.

The motif

The upper band is the hottest passage, yellow passing into orange and then to red at both edges. Dark green and emerald vortices cross the middle and wind around one another like smoke above a fire. Lower left the red gathers into a dark mass; lower centre a pale cream, almost white pool opens. The upper right corner is the darkest place on the canvas, a pine green.

Setting and placement

A very wide canvas asks for a long wall — over a sofa, in a dining room, in a large hall. Everything in it is at full strength, so the wall behind it should not be.
