White and Gold – stepped light and one golden decision
A vertically combed grey-beige canvas with two decisions: on the left half, white rectangular patches climb in steps from the lower sixth to a third of the height – like light falling in stairs onto plaster – while right of centre, in the lower half, sits an organic patch of leafed, amber-gold sheen.
Technique & Texture
The whole field runs in vertical streaks and fine cracks; the white patches have almost rectangular edges, the golden patch torn ones. This is a hand-painted work of art – the gold is laid in leaves, with grey inclusions that give the sheen its age.
The Motif
From the golden patch a dark olive column descends to the bottom edge, and the upper left corner is held by a darker olive-grey block – two dark weights that keep the light and the gold in balance. At the lower left, soft grey horizontal bands cross the field.

Put 50 x 67 cm in a narrow hallway, 60 x 90 cm over a console, 80 x 120 cm beside a tall cabinet, and 120 x 160 or 130 x 175 cm on a staircase wall, where the stepped white patches can climb. The width should be about two thirds of the furniture it hangs beside.
The first photograph is a close-up of the leafed amber-gold patch and the canvas edge on a studio easel, and the second photograph shows the combed grey-beige surface with the edge of a white patch. The leaf gold and fine cracks of this painting are hand-painted, not printed. Why does White and Gold draw the eye?
White and Gold is a calm, bright painting with a single warm gesture: the amber-gold patch at the lower right. The grey-beige ground and the white patches climbing like light on stairs brighten a room without filling it with colour, while the gold adds warmth and a touch of luxury. How is White and Gold painted?
White and Gold is hand-painted by our painters. The grey-beige field is combed into vertical streaks with fine cracks, the white patches have almost rectangular edges, and the gold is laid in leaf with grey inclusions, which gives its sheen the patina of old ornament. The dark olive column below the gold and the olive-grey block at the upper left hold the composition in balance. The first photograph shows that leaf-gold surface close up, and the second the combed field at the edge of a white patch. Because the leaf is laid by hand, the gold patch is never the same on two canvases. When White and Gold is finished, you get a photograph of it to approve before we send it.
Rolled, stretched or framed?
We ship White and Gold the way you choose: rolled, stretched on a wooden stretcher bar, or framed. The canvas is stretched, and framed if you wish, in our workshop in Slovenia. A slim dark or brass-coloured frame brings out the gold patch, while without a frame the combed streaks run right to the edge of the canvas.
How should I hang and care for it?
With an upright painting, keep the centre at eye level, about 150 cm from the floor; by a staircase, measure from the middle of the stairs. The gold comes alive in warm evening light, so a wall or floor lamp that falls on it at an angle helps. Do not rub the leaf gold: lift the dust with a soft dry brush, without water or cleaners, and do not hang the painting above a radiator.
