Grey Haze – a sky of horizontal strokes
A grey monochrome landscape of mist, built entirely from horizontal knife strokes: the upper third is a flat mid-grey sky, and the centre of the canvas is taken by a soft white cloud – the brightest and fluffiest point of the painting.
Technique & Texture
The strokes are laid in layers that overlap softly; the greys run from light silver to dark. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – every stroke has its own pressure and its own edge, so up close the haze breaks apart into dozens of silver bands.
The Motif
The white cloud is framed by two bright silver-white strands: the upper one at a good third of the height, heavier on the left, where it runs from the edge to the middle of the canvas, and the lower one at four fifths, crossing the full width. Beneath it, the grey condenses into a darker base – the ground beneath the sky.
