Golden Seam – one golden line and its knot
A pale blue-grey square cut by a single golden seam: a thin gold line enters at the left edge at a good third of the height – in the upper third of the canvas – runs horizontally and exits at the right edge at the same height. Along the way it comes alive.
Technique & Texture
Across the central three fifths of the width the seam swells into a broad golden relief knot with a crusted, cracked texture – the densest place of the painting. This is a hand-painted work of art – the gold is laid on physically and throws a real shadow in side light.
The Motif
From beneath the knot a warm golden haze seeps downward and fades into the blue-grey by two thirds of the height; above the seam the field is flat and calm, at the lower right gather soft grey clouds, and along the bottom edge tiny speckles and pale drip traces. Sky and earth – only the horizon hangs high.
