Crystal Burst – a white core among grey planes
Painting on canvas shatters grey, olive and near-black planes outward from a bright white core — decorative painting whose neutral ground is exactly what lets one small burst of colour carry the whole canvas.
Technique and texture
The grey planes are laid with a wide blade in long diagonal sweeps that leave sharp steps. The core is built from dense short loads that overlap and chip away in places to the dark ground beneath. Thin bright lines are cut into the paint with a sharp tool.
The motif
The core lies a little left of centre and the planes travel away from it like broken glass. Turquoise, pink and gold traces are distributed around its rim and outline it; they are the only saturated colours on the canvas. Because the dark planes take the right-hand half, the eye returns to the light of its own accord, and the lower right corner is the heaviest passage.
Setting and placement
A grey base is neutral enough to enter a room that is already furnished without asking anything of it. The white core is what answers a directed light; under a spot it opens, and in flat daylight it closes.
