Faces – two looks out of the dark
Painting on canvas confronts the viewer with two large stylised faces on a wholly black ground, blue hair and warm orange-red skin held together by heavy black outlines — wall art with a graphic language and no surroundings at all.
Technique and texture
The colour is laid smooth, in even planes, with no visible texture — the opposite of the impasto pictures in this series. The outlines are drawn with a wide black stroke that holds everything together. The transitions on the cheeks are softly blurred from orange into yellow and blue-green, while the eyes and lips are the most carefully worked places.
The motif
The faces are set hard against the edges of the canvas so both are partly cut — the left one shows its left half, the right one its right. A narrow black gap is left between them. Both have straight-cut blue hair, a large blue eye under a strong brow and full lips. The ground behind them is completely black and empty.
Setting and placement
A graphic motif this strong needs quiet around it — a white or dark grey wall and few other pictures. It works in a living room, an entrance hall, a salon or a bar. Both faces are cut by the edges, which means the picture wants a wall narrow enough to feel like the crop continues past it.
