Sunset – a fiery column of light between towers
A vertical impasto sunset: from the upper centre, a white-gold column of light descends between the dark masses of tower blocks and strikes the horizon at about two thirds of the height – there, on the very waterline, burns the brightest point of the painting, the setting sun.
Technique & Texture
Everything is built from upright, dense strokes: teal tower masses on the left, kindred patches at the upper right, orange and amber columns crowding around the light, and dark chestnut-brown pockets at the lower left and right of centre. This is a hand-painted work of art – tiny red accents still glow in the left towers.
The Motif
The lower third is water that doubles everything: orange-gold-white reflected streams run vertically across the dark blue-black surface. The city and its sunset mirror each other – fire above, its memory below.
