Attention II – three lilies against a diagonal ground
Wall art carries three open lilies and two closed buds right across the width of the canvas, their creamy white petals each crossed by a red-pink stripe running outward from the centre: painting on canvas in which precise botanical drawing sits against a ground worked entirely with a knife.
Technique and texture
The flowers are painted with a thin brush, stamens and all, and their surface is raised just enough to stand in front of what is behind them. A knife laid the ground on in broad overlapping planes that keep their ridges and scratches. Where the two meet the boundary is drawn hard and left unsmoothed, which is the whole tension of the picture.
The motif
No two lilies face the same way: the middle one looks straight out, the right one tilts obliquely upward, the lowest turns left and down. Both buds are still shut, long and sharply tipped, and they hold the left side. Broad, fleshy olive-green foliage crowds the foot of the picture, one blade lying over the next.
Setting and placement
The motif reads from across a room and still rewards standing close, which is unusual at this size. Its earth-toned ground goes with wood, rattan and pale plaster — living room, dining room or bedroom.
