Blossom in Red I – one colour through all its grades
Wall art banks the same block form outward from a dark core in nothing but reds — coral, carmine, burgundy and a brown so deep it is nearly black — abstract painting that sets itself the hardest version of the problem, and no other colour to help it.
Technique and texture
A stiff blade laid the blocks in single presses and lifted at the edges, so each one casts a shadow onto its neighbour. Because every tone is related, the form is not legible from colour contrast at all; relief and shadow are carrying it alone. The core is the deepest point, built from several overlapping layers.
The motif
The outer rings are larger and further apart, the inner ones tighter, so the shape appears to be opening outward rather than closing in. A few blocks are turned aside and break the otherwise regular beat. The edge of the canvas does not finish the form — the last blocks continue past all four sides.
Setting and placement
A picture that is one colour throughout will take over the temperature of a room, so give it a white or grey wall and leave space around it. Near to, the relief is the whole event; from across the room the ring structure is what resolves.
