Bloom in Red II – a flower that fills the whole world
A single gigantic red flower across the entire canvas: square knife plates spread like petals in a spiral from an interwoven centre that lies a little below the middle of the canvas and to its left. The edges of the canvas cut the petals in half – the flower is bigger than the painting.
Technique & Texture
The centre is a braided knot of tiny gold-orange plates, and outward the plates grow in loose spiral rows; each carries visible knife furrows, and the edges are scraped down to gold. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the relief plates cast tiny shadows that shift with the light in the room.
The Motif
The colours circle from red through coral to salmon, while in the upper left and lower corners the flower darkens into bordeaux – the shadow that gives the bloom its depth. The upright format compresses the flowering into height and adds tension.
