Flowers I – two magenta heads over a violet band
Wall art faces two large pink-magenta flower heads against a scarlet field, each head built from five heart-shaped petals with a gilded sheen and a tightly gathered spherical centre: painting on canvas, its petals modelled rather than brushed.
Technique and texture
The petals were raised out of the paint, then smoothed and gilded along their rims, so they catch light quite differently from what is behind them. That upper ground was laid thick and floated over with a blade until it reads as coarse plaster. Every stick in the lower band was formed on its own and pressed into soft paint, with thin coiled wire lines winding up beside them.
The motif
The heads are not level with each other: the left is lower and tips to the side, the right stands higher and turns straight out. Two broad gold-ochre leaves grow from each stem and open downward. Small gold squares are set in the upper corners and along the middle of the lower band, and they are what pulls the whole into a rhythm.
Setting and placement
Two heads and a band of stems fill a shape far wider than it is tall, so the wall behind has to be clear of shelves and switches. Relief this pronounced needs light from the side to draw its shadows, and it survives a darker room better than most.
