Description
paintings – Bulldog – a dog with a bow tie and a cigar
Wall art seats a French bulldog in the middle of an entirely empty white field with no background and no shadow — modern painting deriving its humour from the seriousness with which the animal is built.
Technique and texture
The colour is laid in thick flat sweeps of the blade so that every patch stays separate and stands off the canvas. Scraps of paper carrying small letters are pressed in between the planes and remain legible in places under the paint. The white ground is smooth and untouched, which is what makes the relief of the animal carry.
The motif
The face is drawn with very few marks — two pale eyes, a pink muzzle, ears set wide apart. A grey bow tie and a yellow cigar in a paper wrapper lettered in small type are the only objects in the picture, and they move it out of animal portraiture into something wittier. With no background at all the dog floats on the white like a cut-out.
Setting and placement
A white ground merges into a pale wall and leaves the colour fragments to act as the only accent, which is a quieter effect than the subject suggests. In a seriously furnished room it supplies the relief — a child’s room, a kitchen, a home office.
