Technique and texture
The colour is laid smooth, with soft transitions inside each plane, so the faces read like polished stone. The borders between them are drawn with a dark blue or brown line that is thick in places and thins away to nothing in others. Fine light traces run down from the eyes, painted with a single stroke each.
The motif
Each head is angled away from the next and none of them meets the viewer. Hair runs in wide curves and links one head to the next, so the band never falls apart. Because the faces are cut by the edge, the row appears to continue beyond the canvas, and the eyes are large and almond-shaped with a white highlight in each.
Setting and placement
Saturated colour behind strong contours takes the leading part in a room rather than supporting it, which is a choice to make before hanging it. The wide proportion suits the wall above a longer piece of furniture, or a passage where it is met side-on.
