Wall art seams a narrow band of gold between a dark blue-green fifth at the top and a wide pale field of white and faint pink below — modern painting resting its whole weight on the only shining thing in it.
Technique and texture
The surface is built like plaster: laid in several layers, smoothed with the blade and then scraped back in places. The gold line is not straight — it is a torn, sometimes broken strip of metallic sheen that spills downward into the pale field at a few points. The pink at the edges is thin and rubbed, so the white beneath shows through.
The motif
The dark band at the top is even and almost impenetrable, with no texture in it. Below the gold line the pale field opens, pinkest directly beneath it and along the left edge, passing toward the middle into near-white. Two olive-gold patches appear in the lower corners and behave like a reflection of the line above. Nothing in it can be named, and that is the condition the gold line is there to interrupt.
Setting and placement
A range this quiet in an upright format does its best work in a bedroom, a dressing room or beside a staircase. The gold picks up brass fittings and handles, so it belongs in rooms that already have warm metal in them.
