Technique and texture
Every square is painted separately, with its own tonal fall from a lighter edge toward a darker corner. The spirals are pulled in one stroke, in places with a heavier colour that stands off the ground. The dark divisions are broad and uneven, so the mesh never becomes machine-accurate.
The motif
No spiral matches another — some are tight, some open, some wound the opposite way. Because the colours repeat on an irregular beat, the eye hunts for a pattern and never quite finds one. That is what holds a look longer than a regular grid would, and the squares themselves run ochre, terracotta, red, cream and blue-green.
