Wall art stands vertical columns of gold, orange and ochre above a reflecting surface that takes the bottom quarter of the canvas — abstract painting in everything but the name the title gives it.
Technique and texture
The colour was laid with a blade and drawn vertically downward, which gives the surface its pronounced striped relief. In several places the load is scraped back to the ground, opening thin dark gaps between the columns. The reflection in the lower quarter is painted more softly and more runnily than the thing it mirrors.
The motif
The horizontal of the waterline is the only straight line on the canvas and everything else takes its bearing from it. The columns are of different heights and different widths, so the row never settles into a pattern. The centre is the brightest passage — there the colour thickens into an almost white light that reaches from the top down to the water, and darker blue-green bands close the composition at either side.
Setting and placement
An upright format with a strong vertical will straighten a low room and lift it optically, which is a structural job rather than a decorative one. Beside warm timber the gold tones connect without any effort.

Wheat is painted in 17 upright sizes, from 40 x 50 to 180 x 240 cm. The gold columns want a wall taller than it is wide: 40 x 50 or 50 x 70 cm for a narrow hallway or the gap between two doors, 60 x 80 cm over a 90 cm console, which is about two thirds of its width, 75 x 100 cm beside a bookcase or wardrobe, and 100 x 130 or 120 x 160 cm on a stairwell wall.
