Mountain by the River – Egon Schiele
What does the painting show?
The Leopold Museum records the work under its German title, which names a mountain and the water below it, and that is the subject: high ground above water, taken in a wide horizontal crop. The original is small, 44 cm wide and 30 cm high, painted in oils on cardboard in 1910. In the upper left Schiele left a monogram and the date, written “S. 10” – an initial and a year rather than a full signature. The museum record carries no extended description of the picture, and we add none: what is said is what the record says.
Why do people love it?
Because a landscape is among the easiest paintings to live with. The horizontal format sits well above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed, where an upright picture would have no room, and a subject of mountain and water needs no explanation – it reads at once, and from across the room. Schiele’s name on a landscape is a rarer sight than on a figure, so the work holds a room where a portrait or a nude would be too heavy. And because it is hand-painted, the surface stays alive: the paint has thickness, the stroke stays visible, and the light in the room changes it through the day.
Where does it sit among Schiele’s works?
Among Schiele’s landscapes. Close to it in our selection are Krumau at Night (Dead City II) of 1911, where the town takes the place of the landscape, and Chrysanthemums from the same year, 1910, where the subject is the flower. Schiele died in 1918 aged 28, so this work was made eight years earlier. The full selection is in the Egon Schiele gallery, with more on his life in our article about Egon Schiele.
How is our hand-painted version made?
A painter works every canvas in oils, stroke by stroke: a hand-painted painting made for your order, not a machine print. Two things are hard here. The first is that the original is painted on cardboard while our copy is made on canvas: cardboard absorbs differently, so the painter lays the paint down to stay matt and dry rather than varnish-smooth. The second is the jump in scale. The original measures barely 44 x 30 cm and our smallest size is 80 x 55 cm, so the brushstroke has to grow with the picture – if it stays small, the landscape flattens into a poster. Our copy is oil on canvas. When it is finished we photograph it and send you the photograph for approval, and only then does it ship. This work has not yet been photographed in our workshop, so there are no workshop photographs of it on this page yet.
Which size for which wall?
For an ordinary living room, 145 x 100 cm is the right choice. The original is small, 44 cm wide and 30 cm high, so every size we offer is larger than it. Above a sofa or a sideboard, 145 x 100 cm or 155 x 105 cm; above a desk or a low cupboard, 110 x 75 cm or 125 x 85 cm; in a hallway, a narrow niche or a stairwell, 80 x 55 cm; on a large empty wall or in a tall room, 170 x 115 cm. Prices run from EUR 147 for the smallest to EUR 667 for the largest size. Hang it with the centre at eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor.
Custom size, stretcher bar and frame
If none of our sizes suits your wall, we paint the work to your own measurement. If you choose “YES” under the Stretcher option, the canvas comes stretched on a wooden stretcher bar, ready to hang. Our 3D application is for choosing a frame only, not for showing the work on your wall. The frame is chosen separately and need not be part of the order.
Delivery and guarantee
We paint to order and deliver to sixteen countries in the European Union, among them Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Germany and France; the United Kingdom and Ireland are not currently among them. The painting arrives protectively packed and, if you chose “YES” under Stretcher, stretched on the stretcher bar; before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished work to approve. Production time depends on the size and on the studio’s workload. Every order is covered by our Returns and Refund Policy.
Frequently asked questions
What does Mountain by the River show?
A mountain above a river. The Leopold Museum records the work under its German title and attaches no extended description to it, so we keep to the title as well. It is a wide horizontal landscape crop; the original measures 44 x 30 cm.
When did Schiele paint it, and is it signed?
In 1910. In the upper left there is a monogram with the date, written “S. 10” – an initial and a year instead of a full signature. Schiele was twenty at the time.
The original is oil on cardboard – what do I receive?
A hand-painted oil on canvas. We do not imitate cardboard: we paint on canvas, so you will feel the weave under the paint. There are six sizes, from 80 x 55 cm to 170 x 115 cm, or a made-to-measure size.
Where is the original?
In the Leopold Museum in Vienna, inventory number RL 2382. The museum record lists it as a private collection.
Which size suits a wall above a sofa?
With a standard three-seater, 145 x 100 cm is the safest choice; with a wider suite, 155 x 105 cm. The picture should take up about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, with its centre at eye level.
Does it work as a gift?
Yes; if you are unsure which size to choose, there is a gift voucher.
