Arcimboldo’s portraits of people, in which the faces of the subjects are made up of fruits, vegetables, various plants, animals or even everyday things such as books and food, are unique. Despite the ingredients, in the background of the painted images there is a praise and glorification of the three different emperors that Arcimboldo served. The emperor is a representative of the microcosm who rules the state of the subjects, and at the same time reigns over the universal world. Arcimboldo’s mannerist allegories were always created with the idea that the whole planet, humanity, animals and plants are one.
Close to, the head is built from fish, eels and shells, and the collar is strung from pearls and husks. From across a room it settles into a quiet profile facing left. Who was painted, and where the picture hangs, is recorded nowhere we can check, so we assert neither: we describe what is visible.
