Farm Near Duivendrecht, in the Evening – Piet Mondrian
What do you see in Farm Near Duivendrecht, in the Evening?
The scene is set at the water’s edge as the day comes to an end. The farmhouses at the back no longer catch the light from the front, so they have become dark, almost even shapes under their roofs. In front of them rises a row of tall trees that hides much of the buildings.
The crowns are not green but brown and violet, and they glow because the orange and pink sky lights them from behind. The low sun shines through between the trunks, opening bright gaps among the dark verticals.
The lower part of the canvas is dark water in which the houses and trees appear a second time, only softer. On the right the river turns in a bright bend that catches the last daylight and draws the eye to the edge of the canvas. At lower left you can read the signature P. MONDRIAAN.
What story does this evening scene tell?
The farm stands near Duivendrecht, just outside Amsterdam, and Mondrian painted it many times. Each time he chose another hour and another light.
The daylight version is in a museum in Chicago; you can find it with us as Farm near Duivendrecht. These are two separate paintings of one place: one shows the farm by day, the other at dusk.
This one is the evening version. The day is fading, the colours deepen, and the shapes lose their detail until only outlines are left.
The painting tells no story of people or events. In style it belongs to Naturalism and the Hague School: the landscape is painted from the visible world, with soft transitions and a visible stroke.
Why do so many people love this painting?
Most people know Mondrian from his later compositions of lines and planes of colour. Farm Near Duivendrecht, in the Evening shows a painter who looked at the landscape with the same concentration but at that time still painted it the way the eye sees it.
His feeling for order is already here. The tall trees stand like a row of verticals, while the surface of the water and the horizon lie flat.
The colour wins people over too. The orange and pink sky, the violet crowns and the dark water melt into a warm, glowing whole that does not shout in a room but shines quietly.
Next to the grids that fill most lists of famous Mondrian paintings, it holds its own. Compare it with Mill at Evening, where the dark silhouette of a mill stands against a lilac sky: both show how much Mondrian loved the hour when shapes become outlines.
Where is the original kept?
The original is in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas, under accession number 1987.359. Mondrian painted it in oil on canvas in 1916; it is 80 cm high and 106 cm wide, a clear landscape format about a third wider than it is tall.
At lower left he signed it P. MONDRIAAN, using the Dutch spelling of his surname with its double a.
The daylight and evening versions are in two different museums, one in Chicago and one in Dallas; at home, you can hang both side by side.
Farm Near Duivendrecht, in the Evening or another Mondrian?
This canvas painting belongs in a room with a warm, calm mood: a living room with wood and textiles, a bedroom, a dining room or a country-style room. The landscape format stretches nicely above a sofa, a bed or a long sideboard.
From the early years we also offer Devotion, a girl’s profile gazing upwards, and The Red Tree, where a tree is again the main subject.
If the later grids interest you as well, the Piet Mondrian page lists every Mondrian reproduction we paint to order.
How does our painter paint the evening farm?
Light is what matters in this painting. Our painter first transfers the layout to the canvas: the horizon line, the position of the houses, the spacing of the trees and the river bend on the right, so the proportions match the original.
Then he builds the colour in oil, layer by layer. First the sky in orange and pink, then the dark houses and trunks, then the glowing crowns in brown and violet, and finally the water with its reflections. The bright river bend and the sun between the trees go on last, so they stay the lightest points.
What you get is an oil painting reproduction in which every layer has its own thickness and sheen. Under a lamp in the evening it glows differently than by day, which no print can manage.
What size suits your wall?
In short: for a bedside table or a hallway 40 x 30 or 53 x 38 cm, above a chest of drawers 60 x 45 or 80 x 59 cm, above a sofa or a bed 101 x 74 or 114 x 82 cm, for a large empty wall 140 x 110 or 180 x 140 cm.
All 8 sizes (width x height): 40 x 30, 53 x 38, 60 x 45, 80 x 59, 101 x 74, 114 x 82, 140 x 110 and 180 x 140 cm. The original measures 106 x 80 cm; 101 x 74 cm is 5 cm narrower and 6 cm lower, while 114 x 82 cm is 8 cm wider and 2 cm taller.
Every size is landscape, like the original, so the row of trees and the river bend keep their space. As a painting for the living room above a three-seater, 114 x 82 cm works best; above a double bed, 101 x 74 cm.
Can I get a different size and a frame?
Yes. If you need a different width or height, we paint to measure and adjust the composition carefully so that the trees and the river stay in balance. Send us the size you want, and we reply with a price and a date.
Your evening farm can travel rolled, stretched on a stretcher bar or framed. Stretching and framing are done by our workshop in Slovenia, which prepares all our paintings this way. You choose the frame in our 3D app, which is for frame choice only; seeing the painting on your own wall is a separate service.
The evening colours suit a dark wooden frame or one in a warm gold tone that picks up the orange light of the sky.
When will my painting arrive?
Work on the evening farm begins when your order comes in, and it is ready to ship in 15 to 45 working days. Before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished painting; if you would like something changed, we see to it.
Within Slovenia and to the other EU countries there are no customs duties. Our returns policy applies.
