A single striped gold-and-dark-brown fragment, tilted across the upper left half of the canvas, the rest a clean pale ground – like an excavated object on a museum wall: the fragment enters from the upper left and hangs diagonally, large, taking up almost half the canvas, ending in a broken, chipped tip.
Technique & Texture
Along its length run parallel raised gold ridges with oxidised umber valleys between them, and on its right edge a brighter clean leaf-gold facet lights up. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – the ridges are real relief, not drawn lines.
The Motif
The ground is a cool white-grey, with a soft grey shadow in the upper right corner and a faint blue-grey tone at the lower right. The empty space around the fragment sets it up like a treasure – an artefact given weight by silence.
