Description
Field – five yellow heads in a grey world
Wall art drains the whole landscape to grey — clouded sky, grass, the white house behind — and gives colour to nothing except five yellow flowers standing right in front of the viewer: decorative painting that lives off one single cut of colour. The heads are on thin stems and none of them is the same height.
Technique and texture
The sky is painted in wide swept passes of grey and white that darken toward the top. The grass is worked in short horizontal strokes that give the impression of wind moving through it. The flowers are the opposite: dense and relieved, in clean yellow with brown centres, so they stand out of the grey by touch as well as by colour.
The motif
The upper half is sky, with heavy dark clouds and lighter gaps opening between them. Below it the field rises slightly to the right. A white house with a dark roof stands there with two smaller outbuildings and low trees around it. The lowest of the five flowers sits right on the bottom edge.
Setting and placement
Because everything but the flowers is grey, nothing in the room can clash with it. The yellow gives the room one precisely measured note of colour and no more.
